The Holiday

Hey Celest,
Remember, remember, the 14th of December. When I spent a frigging forty-ish dollars on you. Even paid for the taxi ride to my house. And then I even had to drive you all the way home late at night. I don’t really care how wrong that sounds (sue me). The important thing is, just so you know, after you come back from your Belgium exchange, I demand expect presents.
Like, really big presents. =)
It’s quite irritating how conversations about SMU and grades always pop up now and then, especially during this period when the results start streaming in. You suddenly hear stories about the scum of the earth (ie SMU) — people who are used to scoring their A pluses and moan when they don’t, or people who ask for grade reviews for the sake of trying to get a higher grade, or like in your case, people who are simply too insensitive about other people’s grades, expecting the whole world to sympathise with their 0.01 drop in GPA when the rest of the world (ie the SMU lower caste) falters towards the sub-3 GPA.
This shouldn’t be happening. The world shouldn’t be like this. What is wrong with everyone?!
I don’t know. Sometimes I feel that well-grounded people in SMU is a rarity. I hate the AC/corporate culture. Seriously, just return me to the days of Presbyterian High when everyone was mediocre, and everyone helped each other. When some weeped and some rejoiced during grade releases, but still each had the heart to congratulate/console each other despite our differences. When you had buddies playing football and games before exams. You know, there was such a big hoo-ha when that stupid, I repeat, stupid girl blogger screamed “Get out of my elite uncaring face“, and rightfully so. You effing elitists simply have no heart.
Not to say SMU doesn’t have its great personalities. For one, I’m glad to have many great friends, people whom you can count on in joy and despair. And of course that doesn’t mean I don’t have friends who are doing well in their studies, or come from the so-called elite schools where the culture is so different. There are if you look hard enough.
And so Celest, be glad to know that you’re such a great friend. Remember then these 5 words from me.
I want big, big presents.
Regards,
