Opens 2006 Post-Mortem

2 days at Marina South has finally come to a close. $88 for registration fees, another $120 for other stuff related to the Opens (ankle guard, wristband, shorts, socks, jersey, food). Scratches near my right eye, a nearly broken (damn) pair of glasses, a 50-cent big graze on the right hip, an aching neck/back. 3 Ds and one dive (not a layout, but what the hell). 4 drops, none due to complacency or want of effort.

The team played brilliantly. Well, most of the time. I guess the biggest problem we have is dropping the disc. Our offence were at times painful to watch, as simple catches were dropped for no reason (I’m guilty), while some really rushed throws were made in frustration. Again, our endzone plays were pathetic. It’s a huge lesson that we have to learn from, and we have to tackle it. But other that that, our team played really well, and gave all the teams a good scare and fight. Hell, we dealt brilliantly with Vietnam’s 4-man cup defence and forced them to take a timeout after a really hard-fought point.

I didn’t play much, and quite surprisingly I never even got a single score. In fact, I played so little, I was hardly in the endzone. But I think I played really well. =) The few points I played, I was very involved in the plays, just that I didn’t end up scoring. That great point against Vietnam — I combined excellently with Ben as proppers, constantly breaking the cup, inching our way towards the endzone and killing them off. I would have loved to play more, but in reality the squad was really big.

Things are rosy for SMU Ultimate at the moment. Everyone’s on a high, and I really hope we can push the club forward. Meanwhile, having re-learned how to throw, I guess I’ll need to work hard on it to make up for lost time, and meanwhile work on my D. And from now on, everytime you don’t see me layout for a disc when I could, scream at me.
