Let This Be an Exception

Posted 3/10/07 2:06 by fang under Commentary, Ultimate Frisbee.

I don’t really like to have negative things on this silly blog. I really try to keep things cordial. Whenever I feel angry, I simply don’t blog about it, and since the only people who visit this site are those who google sex terms, no one really notices. Of course, nobody in my sad life will ever bother asking me personally anyway.

So let this be an exception (and let’s not make it a habit.) Today I shall 1) rant and 2) swear.

If you are a designer, or put in a position where you have to make decisions regarding design, have some effing pride lah. I know that being someone who loves design, who has the background, and having the capability to produce decent publicity materials for the club, I set a pretty high standard in SMU. And I understand that you lot are just like every other club — you know nuts about Photoshop. But that doesn’t mean you make poor copycats of what I did last year! I thought I pretty much got the Grab.Huck.Score. element nailed in my publicity posters last year. And I’m really, really proud of them, and without boasting I’m sure a lot of people in the club liked them. I can’t take full credit, because it was based on the brilliant photos that Junkai had taken. Nonetheless, it was a great job.

So what do my successors do? Use exactly the same elements I had used for this year’s efforts. I know that effort has been made to make this year’s designs unique. But if you compare both year’s efforts, the similarity is just uncanny (well, it seems quite clear they used my source file as a template.) I really want to brush it off, because yes I do see the effort in trying to make it different. But really, I can’t. It just smacks of plain laziness in coming up with a concept. Laziness.

To the new exco of SMU Ultimate Frisbee, and especially to my two understudies — I’m damn, damn disappointed. I wouldn’t give a shit if the posters weren’t nice. My friends tell me the recent emailers suck, but I defend you guys all the same. Seriously, great effort! The idea was there! But this time round, why in the world must you resort to the route of convenience? Why indeed. I expected much, much better from you all.

Fuck.
