Lessons to Learn

Posted 23/07/07 1:53 by fang under Ultimate Frisbee.

Today’s training took a very light tone.. at first. Haha. Everyone was quite shacked out from yesterday’s league finals (from which I learned a lot =) and so Justin decided to go easy on us, in the sense that it was more relaxed, the purpose of which was just to get the non-leaguers (for lack of a better term) some practice on the disc.

Haha but things didn’t turn out exactly as planned. Tempers simply flared today during scrimmage. It was still training after all. The focus for scrimmage was on unforced errors (limiting them lah) but well, this is Team SMU after all. So drops and mis-throws became quite common, causing tension among both teams. Something that we all really need to learn.

Again, my performance today was mixed. I’ve neglected my backhand outside-in, but at least I’ve finally managed to get 2 hucks out during a game. My forehand huck ain’t floaty enough, and for the second consecutive day it just zoomed ahead and away of the running girl. I had a few mis-throws, and this is the one thing I have to work on lah — consistency. Simply too many misplaced passes. I had two layout Ds though, always a good thing to have, although it means someone on the field isn’t doing his job (could well have been me.) I’ve been working on being a handler, and I’m kind of scared I will lose it as a mid/deep. I don’t think that will happen though. I would like to think I’m better than that. Haha. But yeah, I’m glad I’ve been put in the position to train as a handler. It has put me in totally new situations that will only improve my game sense.

Just 7 weeks to the Opens. I have lots to improve on, although technically I don’t think I’ve improved much over the past month. Well, like I keep telling the freshies, the most important thing is to know where you are wrong/bad at. How else to make your game better?
