Close friends. A pretty elusive category of friends, rather sadly. Not to say I don’t have close friends, because I do have a lot of them. But at this stage of my life, getting to know people better just seems more difficult. And it’s not for a lack of wanting. Rather, it seems everyone’s older now, and are busy balancing career, school, and maintaining existing friendships. I don’t know, but the relationships in SMU are getting more and more superficial. Sure, you do find people whom you want to get to know better, and of course it helps if you’re from the same club or project group. But how often do you become close to them? Perhaps circumstances have changed. I mean, it’s unlike the school of old when you hang out with the same group of people for years.
Or maybe, just maybe, the simple fact is that as you get to know more people, there’s simply a natural limit to how many people you can actually be close with.
It’s been yet another year, so let me do what I do every single year — thanking and mentioning the people/things who have made 2007 so memorable. *cue the awwwwwws*
Haha, for some reason I’m going to mention Tham Lai Ping first! I just miss her lah and all the bitching. She’s one of the only people whom I can release all my unbridled sarcasm and I won’t feel bad about it. And she can take it! Haha and I really appreciate it. I guess it’s time we should meet up again, and find out whether you’ve had a baby since marriage. Hur hur.
- The truly close friends from SMU. Chong Min, Lawrence, David, Jayne (take care of yourself in Toronto!) and Jasmine. Haha. What else can I say? I love you guys!
- SMU Ultimate. Well, I really love everyone in it. I mean, it’s been 2 years of training and having fun lah. It’s really sad that the familiar faces are all going to disappear though. But c’est la vie, ain’t it? I’m trying to find reasons to stay and continue, but it’s been hard. Oh well.
- The Endurance people. We rock, don’t we? Haha. Bros before hoes/holes! Man, I think I will never find a better bunch of buddies. To think we never met up for the few years after graduation. And we’re now at the point in time again when it’s getting harder to meet up. People are going overseas, while others still are graduating! Damn it’s fast. But yeah, for as long as Jun Yang’s house has SCV and Winning Eleven, I don’t think we’ll ever stop meeting up regularly. Haha!
- The new people I’ve met this year! From re-acquainted primary school classmates (Joanna! Joy!) to the interns at GNS! And I guess the people I’ve come to known better, people like Carol, Esther, Fung Wee (namesake!), and just this month, Luyi. Haha.
- And on a more selfish note, no one I knew died this year.
2007. It’s been a long and everntful year. But I am thankful for everything.
